In this article we briefly explore the different ways there are to understand the concept of competence and take a position on what we understand to be the education in competences. We start from the idea that education must be inclusive of the different areas defined by J. Delors: learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together and learning to be. For each of these areas we have defined a set of competencies that following the order would be: scientific competencies, methodological/techniques competencies, participative/social competencies and personal competencies.
From this premise we have created and validated a questionnaire that allows us to analyze the perception of students regarding the teaching competence of teachers. That questionnaire has been applied to a representative sample of Pedagogy students, formed by 137 students belonging to all graduate and degree in order to obtain data about more and less valued competencies. The results are grouped according to the four preestablished categories.
