Green Sprout: Implementing an Environmental Education Program for Early Childhood Education Students

The natural curiosity of pre-school children about plant growth processes and the influence of the environment prompted a Sustainable Education program at an official school in Barrancabermeja, Colombia. The experience involved families in activities such as composting and creating flower pots with recycled materials, fostering a shared environmental awareness. The study was developed within the framework of the educational innovation project in early childhood based on the methodology of the Ondas program and a qualitative Action Research approach for the analysis of the perceptions of students and their families. This research promoted environmental awareness through the observation and care of plants, as well as the understanding of germination processes, climatic phenomena and sustainable practices from early childhood through a school garden. The results underline the importance of these experiences to develop ecological values, respect and protection of the environment, as well as to understand natural processes and encourage greater involvement in the care of the environment from the early years of education through direct contact with nature and the participation of the educational community.
