Abstract

This paper describes the features of the concept of "Key competencies" of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) as well as "Life skills" of the Secretariat of Public Education (Mexico). It also examines the structure of arguments and speeches that offer both instances to support educational reforms implemented over the past decade. Throughout the text, we offer some critical reflections on the model or approach that provides a basis for the development of "Educational skills and life" in the Reform of Basic Education in Mexico (RIEB, 2009 and Plan, 2011), and proposes some criteria to create an alternative model, and design a more comprehensive school curriculum for Basic Education.
