This article is a preview of genealogical research into the current definition of the concept of “competencies”, in order to value critically their scope and limitations, in order to propose a more precise and operational definition. This study examines four general trends of definition competencies, namely: the competitive domain, correspondence, conceptual correlation and practical effects; as well as the principal confusion that have led to the interior of the socio-educational communities
