Proyecto Escuelas bilingües e interculturales de frontera (PEBIF): a cross-border and integrating project in the Iberian Peninsula

Abstract

The internationalization of education is one of the priority objectives of educational institutions because it is considered of strategic importance for its development and projection. However, this concept does not adequately describe the collaboration that occurs in education between neighboring countries, particularly in border areas where this cooperation allows constant exchanges, shared professional experiences, joint activities, cross-border collaborations. The border between Spain and Portugal has these characteristics. The Bilingual and Intercultural Border Schools Project / Projecto de Escuelas Bilingües e Interculturales de Frontera (PEBIF) is a proposal that seeks to promote intercultural education supported by the bi-/multilingualism and intercomprehension. The general objective of the project is to promote cooperation between Spain and Portugal in the educational, social and economic development of the border territories through the creation of a network of schools that provides the populations knowledge and skills associated with bilingualism and interculturality relevant to citizenship, continuation of studies and employability in both countries. This article presents the PEBIF project, both its structuring theoretical principles and the implementation carried out, as well as the most relevant results obtained so far
