Abstract

his paper aims at characterizing the uncertainties of present day college education, taking as a starting point its history, which is slenderly presented around the axis of its ever changing forms of insertion in the fields of law and power. We think that the intellectual power of universities struggles nowadays with market forces, in a scenario in which educative institutions are loosing the monopoly of the production of advanced knowledge, the monopoly of the exchange value and symbolic value of the credentials by them issued, and the monopoly of the capacity to regulate themselves according to their own ideals and interests.
