Abstract

The linguistic landscape (LL) has been the focus of numerous studies, experiments, and projects in education. This text presents a study on the potential of using the LL as a teacher education resource to develop professional teaching skills. By identifying the educational potential of the LL, we examine the Portuguese context focusing on teacher education programmes for linguistic and cultural diversity. Considering the crucial role that teacher educators play in preparing teachers for new pedagogical approaches in language education, this study specifically explores how the concept of LL and the resulting teacher education activities promote plural(istic) approaches in the training itineraries proposed to teachers. The aim is to understand how teacher educators prepare future teachers to observe, explore and appreciate multilingual linguistic and communicative environments, which increasingly characterise our communities. From this understanding and systematisation, possible paths are proposed for integrating the LL into teacher education programmes
